What are Chinese tourists looking for when traveling to the U.S.?

In 2015, the number of Chinese traveling outside of the country was over 120 million. Tourists from China are increasing 2 times every year, this number has been continuing for the last 12 years; the most popular destinations are Japan, South Korea, Europe and the United States.

Two to three years ago, it was hard for Chinese to visit the United States. As China has become the world’s second largest economy power, the United State has become the popular country for Chinese to travel. According to the ‘Chinese Academy of Social Science,’ by the end of 2015, since the visa validity extension, there were already 250 billion Chinese citizens applying for the travel visa to the United States. This is up compared to the previous year by 52.6%.

Chinese tourists in the United States increased rapidly in recent years. In 2015 the number of Chinese tourists reached 300 million, an increase of 16% over last year. Travel packages provided by big cities are a major contributor to the increase of US tourism; the low cost is also a contributor. Another important factor for the increase in US tourism is the application for the travel visa. It is much easier to obtain than it was before.

The marketing predict, since 2016 is U.S.-China tourism year, major US cities are also offering the various activities and tours for the new influx of Chinese tourists. In addition to the regular tourist routes, they also launch the new medical travel programs.

Many US companies and international Group companies have begun targeting the Chinese travel agents. According to Kathryn Smits, the vice president of international travel of Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Bureau, “Not only we have signs translation in Chinese, but also we should understand the Chinese culture to know what they think and what they need.” But the US tourism department has lots of work to do. If we take Chinese luxury buyers as an example, the US industry needs to know how to reach their standards, for example the serving of hot water and the preparing slippers in their hotel. The US industry is still learning how to make Chinese tourists happy.
